Ninth Duty

How interesting. I remember my father, Kaiser Soze Kukai. He was a wealthy industrialist who provided the initial funds and basis to start the Kukai Foundation. He died when I was still a teenager, around my thirteenth birthday. Perhaps the Foundation hadn't been around long enough to cause an internal power struggle, but he specifically wanted me to take over as Kaiser when he died, and none of the others in high positions opposed his decision and continued to support me even after he died. Of course, the public was never officially told I was running the Kukai Foundation until I turned eighteen.

How strange that I would remember my father and those events, but I still can't recall his face.

There were another two women... sisters? It doesn't seem quite right, but that's how they referred to themselves, at least. Mary and Shelley. Two incredibly bright women, but neither held any official rank within the Foundation. Shelley was easier the smartest of the two, but then she could be considered a genius by just about any known test; the fact that she functioned as navigator and helmsman simultaneously proves that. Of course, that's not to say Mary wasn't intelligent. She's certainly the life of the party, but once she focuses, she has quite the interesting strategic mind.

Ms. Oaks, was it? I'd like to have another word with you at your convenience.

((2% on Soze Kukai and officially becoming Kaiser, 1% on Mary and Shelley. 8% total, 2% remaining.))

Can I help you, Ser Gaignun?

Two things have met with my attention recently that I felt inclined to ask you about.

First, I've heard that Erk struck Jr. with a bolt of lightning, yet neither of them seems terribly worried about that. Would this make any sense to you?

Wh-what!? I haven't heard anything about that! But if they're both alright... I suppose it must have been a weak blast. And an accident, of course.

I'm not entirely sure what happened, and I can attribute Jr.'s lack of worry due to finding magic incredibly interesting. I just found it curious that she didn't seem very worried.

Y-You've no cause for concern. I'll speak to her about it.

Which brings me to point number two.

I would like to apologize.

Oh? Has something happened?

I was a bit over suspicious of your companion. I found what I was looking for, but my assumptions were misfounded.

I understand that you did not want to tell me.

Your apology is enough. Think not of it.

Thank you. I was not sure whether you would accept it so quickly.

Mary and Shelley... I wonder when I'll remember them, too.

It probably won't be long. The three of you were fairly close.

We were, huh? I can see them when you think of them... they look like they're nice.
