Eighteenth Duty - Nigredo's Creed
Oct. 26th, 2009 04:14 amNot the most amusing of costume choices, but I suppose it could be much worse. It looks like an ancient fashion from Lost Jerusalem. Something right out of your books, Jr. About the only clue I have is this empty sheath. Am I supposed to be some sort of warrior of justice? How can I do that without a blade? It'd be like trying to slay a dragon with a wooden sword.
[Private; hackable; unhackable to Jr. and Albedo]
Slay a dragon... why does that fill me with such unease? Slay a dragon... slay a dragon... slay-
[There's a noticeable pause between his repetitions before he finally remembers.]
U-DO Retrovirus Unit 669. Codename: Nigredo.
The Dragon Slayer.
So, Memento Eden. The outfit of an assassin wasn't enough for your humor? And then you take away all the visible weapons? Your point is clear. The killer who only appears unarmed. Don't think your little joke has gone over my head.
[/Private]
Ah, yes, something I forgot to ask. Well, besides where the candy came from, but I doubt I'll get a suitable answer for that. Instead... how do you feel about the concept of fate? Destiny?
((Gaignun Kukai is dressed as Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad, or an assassin, if that's the way you'd prefer it instead. Feel free to note that our friendly businessman is not looking very friendly at the moment, or that the assassin's outfit looks a bit more natural on him than the suit. Or both! 1% spent on Dragon Slayer. 20% total, 3% remaining.))

Sep. 12th, 2009 03:18 pmThis amnesia can really throw you for a loop. It's like I've forgotten how to organize time. The coliseum has at least been profitable lately, and that's about all you can ask for sometimes. Still, I rather enjoy running the place, at least more than I did teaching. Of course, if the new hires continue to be eye candy, I know I'll certainly enjoy it more. Of course, spend too much time running the coliseum and suddenly, you forget your own birthday has come and gone. Perhaps I should make up for that tomorrow.
I have to wonder about this sanctuary business, though. It's the only part of that note that doesn't seem quite right. But then, maybe that's not the important part of the note and I'm focusing on the wrong thing. Always another possibility to consider...
And while I ramble on about forgetfulness, I've still remembered a few things. Mainly physical skills, a few practices and exercises to stay in shape, but past that, I've recalled a few more ethers. Nothing terribly useful, but I suppose every little bit counts.
((Strikethroughs are hackable. 2% spent on advanced melee fighting skills and the Mystic and Rasp ethers. 16% total, 0% remaining.))

Sep. 9th, 2009 10:54 am[In the morning, the Ari and Memoria Apartments had a new addition anonymously posted on the walls and slipped under each door during the night. Those who know him particularly well may recognize Gaignun's handwriting on the paper. The notice itself is particularly long, continuing on both sides of the paper.]
Dear Residents of Memento Eden,
We know precious little about the island and its workings. Information on the subject is not the easiest thing in the world to come by - there are no books on the subject of Memento Eden in the library, and the more important people around the island, most notably the Mayor, are not present for questioning. This notice serves as an attempt to shed some light on the subject for what is believed to be the first time. The following is an excerpt from the journal of Mayor Ari.

I thought the piled up work would have taken longer. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. I did find something intriguing, though. It seems the last manager, who I never got to meet, had some plans that never reached fruition. Crudely outlined at best, but looks to be promising if it works. A tournament is nothing new, but petitioning the mayor for her blessings and possible memories to work as rewards...
I'll certainly have to continue my predecessor's work.
[/Private]
It seems a lot of time has passed since the ball. I've been swamped at the coliseum, clearing out the backlog of work that was left over. As I see Jr. mentioned before, I've left my job as math teacher and took up the position of coliseum manager. I'm sure the students will be devastated to know I won't be teaching them anymore. I'm sure a sufficient substitute will take my place by the time the following semester begins.
As manager, however, I'd like to meet those working at the coliseum so I have more than a name to work with. Whenever you have the time.
And then there's the helpful things returned to me for attending the ball. A scale model of the Kukai Foundation isn't terribly useful, but nice to have on my desk. I find these memories more intriguing, though. The Galactic Federation, the government of the majority of the planets, and several of the laws with long-reaching repercussions. The Life Recycling Act from the turn of the 46th century. It allowed the construction of cyborgs from donors, recycling life. That extended to clones and biologically engineered weapons.
As cloning became rampant, humanity became biologically fragile and couldn't adapt to as many environments. Conflicts broke out over habitable environments. So came the Species Preservation Act to counteract the Life Recycling Act, the goal of which was to fix the genetic flaws caused by the LRA. Those in charge of following through were headquartered at the Kukai Foundation, working to abolish genetic transformation and cloning. The Foundation was chosen as we took in many victims of recycling and helped them form lives.
It makes me wish I had such a large scale project like Species Preservation on my hands again. Something like that and maybe I could forget about amnesia.

So he was right. While there's new names I don't recognize, there are many more familiar ones missing. I don't see Shion's name anywhere, nor have I heard much about her since we met. She wasn't on Memoria's list either, to no surprise. Strange woman. I wish I could have found out what bothered me about her, but it's too late for that.
...it seems Hanyuu still lacks a roommate in 403. I would've thought someone would have filled the room by now... or perhaps her new roommate is among the recently vanished.
It's not just the teaching posts, but I have to wonder if there's a connection somewhere. The last two health teachers didn't stay longer than a few weeks after accepting employment and have been sitting empty ever since. Itoshiki was after that, and the halls have been quieter ever since. Now Fizban and Axel have left as well. That leaves us with Klarth, Shinigami, Saber, Jr., and myself. Morbid as it is, I almost wonder who the next one to disappear will be.

Jr. Stop by the apartment when you have the chance. I have a proposal you may find interesting.

With such advertised rewards, I think a more pertinent question would be who doesn't plan to go. It seems as if everyone is excited about this ball, but then those who aren't going would be easily overshadowed.
The school has gotten much quieter in recent days. No more threats of suicide. No demands to make way for the Dark Hero. No random fireballs. It's almost like I'm not at the school anymore. Summer, of course, has something to do with it, but it's almost unsettling.

I was right.
I was right.
I can't believe this.

I find it difficult to believe that whatever I was given at the church for that headache was enough to knock me out for a week. Then again, I wouldn't rule it out, considering what half the local populace seems capable of. I'd like to request, however, that whatever that was not be given to me again.
I'd almost claim the island was conspiring to keep me from grading the finals on time. Tsuna, if I find there were alterations on your exam, it won't help matters.
((A few notes! For the most part, any knowledge of Yuriev would be blotted out. At most, someone who bore a resemblance to him and parts of the conversation, but nothing major. As for Gaignun himself, he is not in the best of moods and his right hand is nearly permanently balled up into a fist. Have fun!))

Jun. 5th, 2009 04:15 pmSomething about this place is different than home. Perhaps it's getting used to one's senses, but I don't sense the taint of U-DO here. Either Nigredo exceeded my expectations or he found quite the place for me. Of course, it couldn't have been the best of choices if I'm still seeing that failure of a son around.
You still haven't given me a proper answer, Nigredo.
This is hardly how I expected to triumph over U-DO, though. He may still be here, for all I know. Rubedo is going to be useless in any situation, Albedo is... well, that. Citrine would be an excellent ally to have, but I can't seem to get in touch with her. Such a shame; she was the only worthwhile child of the lot.
Perhaps a base of operations would be next. The level of technology on this planet is nothing short of pitiful, but I believe I can get something going even without Sellers and his ridiculous goals.
It's not like I don't have the time, after all.
Now, control over cells clearly turned out unreliable. I wonder what to give 670...

URTV 669, designation: Nigredo. There's no doubt in my mind; that's my real name. That certainly explains the tattoo, but it barely explains anything. URTV 669... but what exactly is a URTV? It almost sounds like a Realian, but they're aware they aren't human. Would I be? Memento Eden has tampered with my memory already, is it just that I don't remember? If Nigredo is my real name, why do I go by Gaignun Kukai?
And then there's the issue of Rubedo. He's six weeks older than I; why did I remember him as a son? Why hasn't he gotten older? Does he remember as much? Are we even human? I need to have a word with him after work.
I don't find this game amusing in the slightest. I'd rather leave or have my memories back than go through such speculation each time.
[/Private]
It seems Aerith has deigned to leave our company. She's not listed in the apartments anymore, at any rate, and I would have heard someone moving into Memoria. Well, at least one of us managed to escape this place.
Of more import, I would have thought the island's games with ages would have stopped earlier than this. No sooner do some change back that a new group of people are affected. Can't say it's desirable, but it is... interesting.

May. 22nd, 2009 02:50 pmThe outside world is a lot different than I thought it was. Dad would always say that the people out here were worthless and inferior to us, that we were more perfect than they are. But in getting information about this Memento Eden... I was expecting a lot worse. They're helpful and nice. I wonder if it's just this place, or if everyone's like this. Is Dad wrong?
It's still a strange place, though. Rubedo, a lot of people seem to know you here, or they've seen you around before we got here. They keep calling you Jr., or they call me that. Have you been hiding something?

May. 17th, 2009 01:11 amRubedo. Are you there? The connection coordinates are off and I can't find you nearby. I'm in a place surrounded by trees. It looks too well-maintained to be a forest, so my estimation is a park. If you can hear me, please respond with your location.

Twelfth Duty
May. 12th, 2009 02:15 amI found this during the move; it appears I've neglected it this year while I've been building a new life. I apologize, Hanyuu, but this was something I had been planning for a while now. With any luck, you should be getting a new roommate soon. As it stands, I took the opportunity to get an apartment at Memoria.
Sometimes, you don't realize what you missed until you have a similar setup. I thought I was fine in the Ari Apartments, but now that I have the room and the finances available to replicate my office at the Kukai Foundation... well, it goes without saying that I like this much better. Not to mention I haven't had a decent game of pool in a while. Jr., perhaps we should fix that shortly. Use it for its intended purpose rather than you just sitting on it.
With the move and other circumstances on my mind, I feel I've almost been neglecting the students. Then again, it is exam season, and true to form, several students are disappearing right before them. Tsubaki, Haruhi, Kyon... attendance is dropping at an alarming rate. Then again, I'm sure they're happier back wherever they are.

Apr. 1st, 2009 02:38 amIt was a dark, rainy day. Nine at night. It didn't take an Excalibur to realize that there was a problem with that sentence. Fortunately, Gaignun Kukai doesn't care for shit like making sense.
Gaignun, I said, you know what you really need? No, not the touch of a woman. You can get that whenever you feel like it. No, not revenge against your father. You don't even remember your father, and at this rate, that may be for the better. No, you don't need to kill that son of yours, tempting as it may be.
No, Gaignun Kukai, what you need? You need a fucking sandwich.

So that was where the Godwin sisters came from; it almost makes me sick just to think of it. However, it does provide some indirect information about the Foundation. For one, we had our own private forces. This would bother me if it were all I remembered, however, I don't believe anyone else would have made that strike. Furthermore, from what I remember of the other operations, it was hardly a major force.
It still leaves more questions. Why did I insist I had to join in on this strike when I knew there was going to be resistance? I can't remember much of the fighting, but I do know I wasn't armed, save for maybe a pistol. Everything just gets a bit more confusing.

Jan. 15th, 2009 06:18 pmHow interesting. I remember my father, Kaiser Soze Kukai. He was a wealthy industrialist who provided the initial funds and basis to start the Kukai Foundation. He died when I was still a teenager, around my thirteenth birthday. Perhaps the Foundation hadn't been around long enough to cause an internal power struggle, but he specifically wanted me to take over as Kaiser when he died, and none of the others in high positions opposed his decision and continued to support me even after he died. Of course, the public was never officially told I was running the Kukai Foundation until I turned eighteen.
[Private; hackable]
How strange that I would remember my father and those events, but I still can't recall his face.
[/Private]
There were another two women... sisters? It doesn't seem quite right, but that's how they referred to themselves, at least. Mary and Shelley. Two incredibly bright women, but neither held any official rank within the Foundation. Shelley was easier the smartest of the two, but then she could be considered a genius by just about any known test; the fact that she functioned as navigator and helmsman simultaneously proves that. Of course, that's not to say Mary wasn't intelligent. She's certainly the life of the party, but once she focuses, she has quite the interesting strategic mind.
